Make sure they are accomplishable. The one thing most people who procrastinate are guilty of is taking on too much.

Write down your goals

Often people seem to be procrastinating simply because they don't know where they are going. What is the end goal? Knowing your goal can help you cut your daily tasks into small bites. This is great for organizing your schedule and keeping you on track.

It's important to write them down. We have so many they can get lost in the day-to-day shuffle. And writing them down makes them real...

Get rid of all those distractions

Working at home can be a challenge for some home business owners. Kids, chores all seem to sneak into our thoughts and seem more important than the boring task at hand.

A Story about a "Perfectly Polished" Woman...Almost

About a year ago, I met a woman at a business conference at a local college. She approached me to ask some questions about the small business coaching services I offer. She was a very attractive woman, tall, with classically refined features, and perfectly manicured and polished nails. She wore a well-cut designer suit, clutched a high-end handbag, and wore shoes to "die for". I thought, "Wow, this woman puts on a winning image", and I felt a little embarrassed, because I knew I was not as well "put together" that day.

Then, as she turned to walk away, I spotted it...

...a plastic tortoise shell hair clip.

Her dark, shiny hair was pulled back by a clip that looked like it had layers of hair grooming product residue on it. A corner piece of the clip was actually broken off. Everything positive this woman had projected was immediately tarnished by the negligent afterthought about her hair accessory.

I assumed the woman must have been in a rush that morning, and grabbed the first hair clip she could get her hands on...because she looked so fabulous in every other way.

Recently, I saw her again at another small business conference, and she looked fabulous, just as before. We spoke for a few moments, and as she turned to walk away, there it was, AGAIN...

...the dirty, broken tortoise shell hair clip.

I then realized that she had no idea the hair clip had a negative affect on her entire appearance. She must have thought no one would notice, or, because the rest of her outfit was so polished, it wouldn't matter.

Wrong.

Details Matter

My point here is not to ridicule this woman: but, how one bit of negligence can ruin the the presentation of your entire small business marketing package, and, guess what...there goes the sale! (The same applies for men, too.)

Seeing her made me realize that I had a few "marketing package blunders" of my own---especially when it came to the personal brand image I was projecting.

I realized that if I wanted to project being a polished, knowledgeable professional, and be on track to grow a million dollar business, I had better start looking like one!

That's what made me decide it was time to redefine and update my personal brand image, have professional photographs taken, create a new website for my small business marketing and coaching business, and invest in a few more high quality pieces of clothing for my wardrobe.

Even getting eBook covers professionally designed is part of my "marketing makeover" plan. (My new personal brand image has not been released yet, but will be in fall 2008.)

I know my attitude, and the actions I am taking will pay off immensely. When I started the Internet business segment of my small business marketing and coaching business, I was just "playing around". Now, I've decided, it's time to get serious.

Are you just playing around? Or, do you want to be taken seriously by your target audience. Do you want to set yourself apart from your competition, and sell a lot more products and services?

Assess the *Tingle* Factor of Your Marketing Materials

Take about 30 minutes this week and objectively assess what personal brand image you are projecting, and inventory the quality of all of your small business marketing materials. This includes your website, photographs of you, business cards, brochures, product packaging, business forms -- anything that your prospects or clients see. Do they look consistent, professional, up-to-date, and polished? Or, do some of them look like your eight year-old child designed them? Do they make your spine tingle in a good way? If any of them give you shame, they're your "marketing package blunders", and need rework!

Make a list of:

1. Which marketing materials need rework.

2. What you're going to do about them, and by what date.

3. Identify who can help you fix them.

As I have traversed the World Wide Web, I have found sites that have been thoroughly impressive and others not so much. One day the owner went on a buying trip but prior to leaving she left a note for her head saleswoman stating, "Everything in this display case, price x 1/2," in hopes of getting rid of the offensive jewelry, even at a loss.

The store owners handwriting must have been horrific because the saleswoman mistook "1/2" to be "2", and the entire allotment was sold for twice the original price!

The jewelry only sold because a higher price led to a perceived higher value. You see, "Perception is the key to the mind".

If you place your website in a side-by-side comparison to your competitor, both offering the same product, the same price and the same value, the one who wins is the one with the best design hands down.

Take time to think of what you are communicating to your customer and how it is best communicated. Through the creation of your compelling exchange your customer will find greater value in your website by "Design".

If you choose not to outsource things then you are going to have to develop the skills it takes to make money online running your own business. The most important skill you can learn is traffic generation.

Even if you hirer out someone to build the most beautiful website in the world, if you never get anyone to your site, you'll never make any sales and earn any money.

How To Create Hungry Hordes of Happy Buyers by Ian Fleming

Here we are. We're going to go through affiliate marketing from A to Z. I'm going to show you a campaign. This campaign made me in the order of $20,000 and it was a pretty low-priced product, so you can imagine how much of this I've sold.
I'm going to show you everything that I did step-by-step as quickly as I can.
You might be thinking at the outset that this had a lot to do with the size of my list. Yes, you do need a list to do affiliate marketing. I'm also going to be touching on that as well.
You also really need a website. If you don't have a website yet get over to www.KioskWebsiteHosting.com. Apart from that you're pretty much ready to go and I'll show you every step of the way exactly what I did.
First off let me go through how I actually promoted this product as an affiliate. It doesn't matter the size of your list. You can have 100 people on your list and have a massive payday. Do not get obsessed with the size of your list.
The first thing I did is I started pre-launching this and pre-selling this before the product even went live. It went live on a Tuesday and this is the Monday - not the Monday before the launch, but the Monday the week before the launch, so this is over a week before the product went live. This is the email that I sent out.
"Surprise, surprise! Here's another pdf newsletter for you..." and I sent them off to my blog, giving them some snippets of what is in the newsletter, which included this bit...
"Ex-Gangster Turned Internet Marketer Reveals His Site-Stealing Secrets"
This is a promo. The product that I'm telling you about - let me just click back there, I kind of jumped the gun a little bit - is this, Harris Fellman's www.SiteStealing.com. That is the product. It's essentially a product that tells you how to swipe and steal sites legally, model from the best, borrow from the successful campaigns. That's the product and this is what I did.
So I sent that email out. That was the first step that I did, sending people to my blog, so this is on my blog where I sent people first. I sent them to go and grab this pdf.
When you're building up your list it's a great idea to send multiple things out to them in different formats. Don't just send email text. Send video, send audio, stuff that they can download, and people on my list really love these pdf documents.
So I sent them to my blog to go and download this, and some people obviously went on and commented.
So you download this and what happens? This is what you actually get. This is inside the newsletter, and then here you can see - so this is again a week before the product's gone live I'm putting it in the newsletter. This is a free newsletter. There's a lot of free content in here, and also in here I've got this headline -
"Éx-Gangster Turned....reveals his site-stealing secrets next week" - so I'm telling them that it's coming, it's on the way.
"I've been reviewing a new product that a lot of marketers have missed the boat on. It's being unveiled on Tuesday, the 17th of July, next week."
I'm telling them about it but I'm importantly not giving them a link to click on. That's really getting people hungry, building up their desire, making them feel curious, but not actually giving them anything to click on.
I include a little picture there. The reason I've done that is to start the branding. Harris had a really well-branded site. It was branded all the way through to this character they called Sal the Gangster, all throughout his website with videos and in the product as well, so I've just put that in here so that people see it right from the beginning. Over a week before the product's gone live they start to associate with this character.
Who is he? Is he really a gangster? Is it like a made-up thing? Can you actually steal sites? How am I going to make money? What's the link? What's the website called? Who is this guy? I'm raising and creating curiosity.
Scrolling down, there's the rest of the newsletter with various things in there.
"P.S. You're going to discover how you can legally steal sites next week. I'm going to show you who this guy is. I've included another picture of him here."
It's important that you try this type of technique by blacking things out, name censored or removing things, giving people a little bit of the information but also holding some of it back so they're thinking, "I really want to find out what that is," even if they're not 100% keen on getting the product. They want to find out what that information is.
So that was Step 1, sending out that pdf newsletter and raising curiosity.
Let's go back to my list of emails then and I'll show you what the next thing is that I sent.

Later that week on Thursday I emailed people with, "If site stealing was legal, would you do it?" This is tapping into people who have already read the newsletter and it's giving them a little bit more information.
I've said "Yes, it's coming out next week. Don't sue me. None of these tactics are actually illegal," and then I start dropping further carrots.
"This is the fastest way to improve results of almost any sales page. If you correctly ____ ____, your results can skyrocket."
Level 2 - "____ and run. If you're starting out you'll love this strategy."
I go and I've used this stuff. I haven't created this stuff myself. I grabbed it from his sales page, so remember that. It's a great idea when you're putting an affiliate promotion together, whether you're sending it via email, putting it on your website, your blog or anything, is to use the sales letter from the product. Either get permission or just go ahead and borrow some of the stuff from the product sales page and give that to the people that you're trying to educate.
"Look, this is the great stuff, the cool stuff," so I've done that, but I've blanked some of it out, again to raise curiosity.
Even now you can see in the newsletter there was no link, and even in this email there's no link. I put here, "Do you want to know more about site stealing?"
Then I'm saying, "What happens next week Tuesday when it goes live?" I say that I'm going to be doing an incredible bonus, and then I say, "P.S. What's wrong? Are you looking for something to click on?" because I'm not giving them a link.
People want a link at this stage. They've already seen the newsletter. They've seen the pictures of the guy. They know a bit about the product and the site stealing idea, or the notion of it, but I'm not giving them anything to click on. I'm building up the curiosity.
The only thing I did send them to click on is my blog so they can go back and post comments and discuss with other people how they're getting excited about it. This is all the week before.
It then gets to the week of the launch. This one, as you can see, is the Monday before the launch. I'm priming them now. I'm telling my list, "Get ready, it's coming."

For example, "car insurance."

Once you know your short head keywords, you will want to market directly to more specific, longer keywords related to the main short head keywords. These longer, more specific keywords are known as "Long Tail" keywords. For example, "car insurance discounts in Georgia."

Although the traffic for each long tail keyword is usually much less than its short tail relative, if you add up all the long tail keywords, they will usually add up to much more traffic and most importantly, targeted traffic, than the short tail keywords alone.

4. Unique Content and Web 3.0

Once you have targeted the long tail keywords for your business or niche, then you can start marketing for them.

The cornerstone for organic search engine marketing is unique content creation. Whether it's 500-word articles, blog posts, blog comments, forum posts, social snippets, or videos, you are going to want to be able to create unique content based on your long tail keywords.

Web 3.0 is a term that refers to the future of the World Wide Web. In our opinion, that future includes the "Semantic Web" or web use affected by artificial intelligence. Sounds kind of like Star Wars®, Alien and E.T. all wrapped into one big and scary WWW...doesn't it?! Well, not really of course. Semantic Web in this case just means that search engines will be able to figure out what a web page is all about in a different, more intelligent way. The major idea here is that search engines will take a more encompassing view at a page and understand its meaning rather making a determination based on figuring out which keywords pop up most often. In this new Web 3.0 scenario, a search engine might find a web page on "sun tanning in Florida" to also be quite relevant to "sun tan oil application" and therefore list this example page in the search engine results pages under both keywords.

What does Web 3.0 mean to you? Basically, when creating your unique content, keep the semantic web concept in mind and use synonyms for your target keyword wherever it's natural. Never stuff keywords in your content, i.e. use a keyword just to use it and not when it should be used naturally...and never stuff keyword synonyms either!

5. Internet Marketing and Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is the "Social Web," so naturally, the concept of social marketing should apply to today's Internet Marketing strategies.

Social marketing includes posting on social networking, social news and social bookmarking websites.

You can also think of blogging as part of Web 2.0, and of course you're covered because you have read Section 2 above.

In conclusion, whether you own your own ecommerce business and sell your own products, or if you are an affiliate or super-affiliate, organic search engine marketing must be on your "actions list." A great place to start is Google advertising. I'm going to go through this very very quickly because it costs money and I know that you'd probably prefer free methods, so I'm going to go through this very very quickly.
You probably know that over on Google you've got these ads down the right-hand side. You can actually advertise and send people to a landing page or to your own site that has your review or video review or comments or whatever, and then send them from there over to your affiliate offer.
It's a great way to add value. You can add a bonus. You can add a review. You can say, "Look, this product is great but it's leaving this particular part out. The bonus that I'm offering you fulfills that gap in the product."
There's loads of different things that you can do, and advertising is one way to get traffic. It's paid so I'm not going to spend a lot of time on it. The only thing I want to tell you on this is real basic kind of pay per click lessons.
Don't use www down here. Use this.
Capitalize the first letter of each word. You want to test this stuff, make sure you're testing it, but as a rule that tends to stand out a lot better than this.
Focus your ads on specific phrases. You can see this one says 'Sit, Stay, Fetch' but the phrase that we've typed in, if you have a look over here, is actually 'dog training.' This company should have gone out of its way and actually created an ad specifically for the phrase 'dog training' so that that comes up here.
As you can see, when you do that it goes bold. When you have the phrase that matches in your ad it goes bold. So don't just create one ad and dump all your phrases in it. Create one ad per phrase.
In fact, you need to be doing even more than that. You need to create two ads per phrase so that when you have a winning ad - let's just say you've got two ads here and this one actually converts better - you will then create two new ads with two different headlines. Maybe then this one wins that, and then you go on and so on and keep doing what's called 'split testing' down the way. What that does is puts your money through the roof.
Those are my very quick top tips on how to make more from your pay per click ads.

The cool thing about Squidoo is that the search engines love Squidoo.com. Anything on here is almost 100% likely to get featured in the search engines because it's updated so often.
How do you do it? Let me show you -
You come to the site, www.Squidoo.com, and you click on 'Make your own lens.' If you don't have an account you say, 'No, not yet. I'm not one of the 168,000 people. Let's get started.'
You then write what your lens is about. My lens is about Product XYZ. Go to Step 2. This really is as easy as it gets.
You then select what you're using this for. Are you using it to get information out about this particular thing? Are you using it to sell this? Do you want to make a list of your favorite things about this? Do you just want to do your own thing?
You're using it make money. Squidoo lets you do that and that's what you're going to do. Select that and go to Step 3.
This is where you give your lens a title. You put in the title of your lens there. You put in whatever you want the link to be.
Now it's important that you put in the product name here because this is what is going to turn up in search engines - Squidoo.com/product name. You might find for some products that the product name is already gone. You might go for Michael's Traffic Videos, because when people then search in Google and in the search engines for Michael's Traffic Videos or traffic videos or traffic product or whatever, your site here on Squidoo has a good chance then of turning up, so make sure you do that in there.
Pick a topic. What is the topic? Scroll down here and you'll see there is a topic for search engine optimization and affiliate marketing. You might want to select that. Is it rated for safe for all people? Yes, it is.
Then you just click Go to Step 4. This is where you have to put in the tags or keywords. What do you think are the best keywords? So whatever your product is. I'm still using this Product XYZ, so I'll say XYZ. Let's just say it's a dog training product, so dog training, dog obedience, whatever the phrases are that you think people are going to look for. Put them in here and put them in here.
Go to Step 5. You've then got the option of donating some of the money that you make from this site to the charity fund or a specific charity, or if you just want cash it's entirely up to you. Just select those options.
Go to Step 6. You're nearly there. Put in your email address. Put in the name that you want to appear on the screen. Put in your first name and your last name. Accept the Terms and Conditions, all the usual stuff.
Click on Done and that's it. You're then done and ready to create the lens.
I'll now go in and show you what it looks like once you're actually inside the page ready to create your lens.
You've created your lens. That's what they call it on Squidoo, a lens rather than a web page. It simply means this single web page. This is the completed one that I've already done. It took a little bit of time to go through that and I'll show you right now how you do each of these little bits and bobs.
You go through and the first thing you need to do - I've already set this account up, but you'll need to go in and edit your biography. You can upload a photograph. You can see there 'browse.' Go and find a photograph if you want for yourself in your profile.
You can edit the description or the name of the page, the introduction, you just click on edit, put in the title, put in the description.
When you're doing this, make sure that you are actually putting in things that you think people are going to type in, so the product name and the type of product. You can upload a photo specific to this particular lens or this particular page. Just click browse, upload photo, that's that bit done.
Then you've got all these different what they call modules. At first glance this looks a little confusing. You think "What on earth is all this stuff?" This is all potentially things that you can include in your lens -
* eBay
* Guest book
* iTunes
* Voting
What I tend to do is just not bother with any of that and just go straight to the text module. You just click on edit and stick in your headline here, your sub-headline, why the product is great, and then just go on and do a review here, explain the product, the benefits, do the case study, the before and after, and you can put links in using just standard HTML.
If you don't know how to do HTML code to create a link like that, just go off to Google. I haven't got the time to go and show you that. This is not an HTML tutorial video, but just go to Google and put in 'HTML tutorial.' You'll find out how to do a link and the code that you need. Put that in and add the links through to your site.
Now don't overdo it with the links. You don't want to just bombard them with your links. Put in a lot of content. If you go back and look at mine, you can see I've got a link here right at the top, but other than that there's not many links. There's one down here. There's a lot of content, videos, there's a fair amount of text on there, a couple pictures - good content is what's important when you're doing this. Don't just slap this up in a couple minutes.
If you want to upload pictures, again just click browse, and that's it. That's the first kind of text section. You can see it here on my lens. That is that particular thing. This is the headline, the pre-headline, and then the photo I uploaded, the text, and then the link there. That is one text module.
You can then go off and add another text module. How do you do that? There's a link here that says 'add modules.' You can see here 'add text modules.' Just click on that and it will add another module.
Let's go and add this YouTube video. That enables you to add a YouTube video to your lens.
